It turns out that we are better designed than we think, almost everyone can enjoy greater fluidity and less tension or stiffness in their body and their mind.

The person who worked all of this out, FM Alexander found out that many of the aches and pains we have come to expect as part of the aging process or the stress of modern living (and office furniture) have their roots in the way we ‘use’ our bodies and also the way that we use our minds. He found that most people can reclaim their birthright of a more enjoyable and easier ‘flow state’ if only they can learn to prevent harmful patterns that have become habit that have become so familiar they are no longer noticed.

Alexander teachers train three years to learn to use their hands in a non-intrusive and skillful way to assist and guide you in movement to start the process of retraining your nervous system so that it can react in a different way to the things going on in your life. Alexander teachers usually give verbal guidance as well giving a dual experience of concept and direct experience.

Finding your flow
Our bodies and minds are capable of a deep level of fluid co-operation that reduces internal friction, effort and wear and tear. Unfortunately our lifestyles and stress often erode this internal harmony and instead we find for example a conflict of interest between the way we use our arm and our shoulder, its as if we are giving out incompatible messages to our bodies and unfortunately when we eventually embodying these harmful patterns as habits, they seem natural to us even though they persist at cost to our well being. Alexander teachers help people retrain their nervous systems, re-coordinate themselves and re-establish natural patterns once more, this applies to our physical balance, standing on our feet as well as our emotional balance.
